Windsor Park Course D
Yesterday I had a chance to play at Windsor Park and Golf Club. If you are not familiar with this course it is because it recently underwent a name change. The former name was Panya Park and it was one of the 5 Panya group courses in the mid-90’s. I believe it was sold another investor around 2000 during the troubled economic times here, but that is another story for another post.
Up until now the course had been a very nice Bangkok style (i.e. flat and open) 27 holes, 3 nine hole layout. However, an additional 9 holes (Course D) was just completed and opened for weekend and holiday play. I was quite surprised about this since there was not much land available nor could I see any construction nearby in the past.
So when me and my friends were taken by truck, clubs caddies and all, after playing only 6 holes of course C, it was shocking to see such a fantastic course just nearby. The entire 9 holes plays in a circle around a large lake. By the looks of it the lake was dredged out below sea level and used as a great way to get elevation and slope on each of the holes, which is very rare in Bangkok. Now a few of the holes play up hill, down hill, and there are even 2 holes with fully side hill lying fairways. The greens are well guarded by sand traps and once on the greens putting is made especially tricky by large undulations. The course is in excellent playing condition.
I would say after playing these nine holes that the course has to be the best newest golf courses in town. Everything about it is unique and it is unlike any other Bangkok golf course. I hope the owners and designers have an opportunity to partner again on another full 18 hole project. In the meantime, if you have the opportunity to play at Windsor Park, be sure to do so on the weekends and request play on Course D, the new course. You will not be disappointed!
